Why People Become Vegetarians

The reasoning behind vegetarianism cannot be neatly summarized by one statement. There are probably as many reasons for people becoming vegetarians as there are vegetarians. The definition of vegetarianism can range from one extreme to the other. Some vegetarians still occasionally eat meat. Some vegetarians do not eat or use any products that are made from any part of an animal. Some reasoning is personal and abstract. Humans are complex enough to base their actions on the unseen. Others reason from the very concrete. There are medical reasons to adhere to a vegetarian diet. Although each individual decides in his own way, following are a few of the more common reasons for vegetarianism.

Matters of Faith
There are several religions in the world that advocate vegetarianism. Buddhism is one example of a religion that demands vegetarianism from its followers. In many cultures life is valued so highly that not even insects are to be killed. The natural outcome of such values is an entirely vegetarian culture. American vegetarians draw on Indian and other eating styles to add variety to their own diets.

Ethical Values
There is another group of vegetarians that value animal life above the filling of their plates. These vegetarians are not necessarily members of a religious group, but they do hold many of the same values. No doubt, those that simply wish to protect animals do admire the religious mindset, but hold their views apart from any organized group.

Flavor Appeal
There are some vegetarians that may not hold any of the same values as the above mentioned groups. They view animals as less than human. They have no moral dilemma about the use of animals for human consumption. These vegetarians simply do not enjoy the flavor of meat. Red meat especially often carries with it a little bit of bloodiness that is unappetizing for many. When it comes down to it though, meat has an animal flavor to it that cannot be disguised. Plant products have a cleaner and fresher taste without the heaviness of meat.

Body Benefits
A final group of vegetarians is simply practical. They have found the natural personal benefits possible from a vegetarian diet. Plant products are lower in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than animal products. Those recovering from cancer are often directed by physicians to switch to a vegetarian diet. These health conscious veggie eaters are more likely to occasionally indulge in a little bit of meat. They may even prefer meat main dishes to a vegetarian diet. Their reasoning for eating vegetarian is that they would like to try to improve their health and well being.

Again, there are several reasons that people become vegetarians. Some are raised on a vegetarian diet and do not know any differently. Others make the decision later in life. The reasons range from abstract to concrete and from personal to communal. The reasons are prevalent enough to reach more and more people. The reason are strong enough that the vegetarian population will probably only increase in number as time goes by.
