Facts About Pain

The more that you know about pain, the better prepared you’ll be for dealing with it. Everybody faces the sensation known as pain on a day-to-day basis, yet few realize all of the options that they have when it comes to treating chronic pain. In this article, we’ll work towards increasing your knowledge about pain so that you can have a better understanding of the sensation.

- Chronic pain is a very prevalent problem throughout society today. Surveys have shown that around nine out of ten Americans suffer from some form of pain regularly occurring in their lives monthly or more often.

- Cases of chronic pain can lead to other health problems if left untreated. Many who suffer from chronic pain also tend to develop problems such as anxiety, depression, or irritability due to the condition.

- One of the most commonly experienced types of chronic pain is chronic back pain. Estimates place between fifty and eighty percent of all Americans as having some form of back pain at some point in their lives. Approximately ten percent of all adults experience some form of back pain per year.

- There are two different types of pain – acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is classified as the type of pain that you experience momentarily, and chronic pain is considered pain that takes place over a period of 12 weeks or longer. Acute pain problems can be taken care of with pain reliever medication, but chronic pain sufferers need to turn to other methodologies such as acupuncture or reflexology.

- When you experience a type of localized pain like getting kicked in the shin, you may instinctively start rubbing around the area. Ever wonder why it seems to help? Many people subscribe to the ‘gateway theory’, which states that the body can only allow so many sensations to be processed at once. If you are experiencing intense pain, try giving yourself a less drastic sensation by rubbing around the area. The gateway theory states that if you overload your body with sensations by rubbing the area around the injury, your body won’t be able to process all of the pain signals and you will therefore feel less of the pain sensation.

- The most common family of pain reliever medications that are used in society today are known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen fall under this category. Many people choose to go for alternative forms of therapy as opposed to these types of pharmaceutical drugs due to the long-term types of damage they can do to the body, including liver damage and the possibility of the development of an ulcer.

The more that you know about the pain sensation and the possible methods of lessening its effects, the better suited you’ll be for dealing with pain problems when they hit you. It’s a part of life that is completely natural but it also doesn’t need to control your life.
